Stroop Colour-Word Test

Say the COLOUR of the word, not the word itself. For example, if you see the word "BLUE" written in red ink, say "red."

Purpose: This test measures cognitive processing speed, selective attention, and executive function — specifically the ability to inhibit automatic responses.

What it assesses:

  • Processing speed

  • Selective attention

  • Cognitive flexibility

  • Response inhibition (frontal lobe function)

Clinical Application: Stroop interference — the delay caused by incongruent colour-word pairs — can be prolonged following concussion, making it a useful tool for assessing cognitive function and tracking recovery. You can perform the task on its own or add a dual-task, such as gaze stabilization.
